An anti-parasite drug called ivermectin is used to treat parasitic disorders such as external parasites, hookworm, whipworm, and parasitic worms. The FDA has approved ivermectin tablets (Stromectol) to treat onchocerciasis (river blindness) and intestinal tract strongyloidiasis. The FDA has approved ivermectin lotion (Sklice) to treat head lice and ivermectin cream (Soolantra) to treat rosacea.
Off-label usage of ivermectin tablets treating parasites, including scabies, has also been documented.
Ivermectin causes parasites to die by paralyzing their muscles. In parasites, ivermectin works by attaching itself to glutamate-gated chloride channels (GluCl) and paralyzing the parasite. Since it cannot penetrate the central nervous system of mammals, which contains the GluCl channels, it has no effect on them. Tablets containing ivermectin are also believed to support the human immune system’s ability to defeat and eliminate young worms. Tablets containing ivermectin are believed to inhibit the parasite’s capacity to release proteins that aid in its evasion of the host’s immune system.
Typical ivermectin side effects The following are typical ivermectin adverse effects: headache and aches in the muscles; dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, or minor rash on the skin. Serious adverse effects of ivermectin If you have any of the following symptoms of an ivermectin tablet allergy: hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical attention. There could be more severe adverse effects. Make an immediate call to your physician if you have: vision issues, swollen eyes, and eye pain or redness; severe skin rash, pus-filled rash, or itching; disorientation, a shift in your mental state, issues with balance, and difficulty walking; swelling in your hands or feet, joint discomfort, stomach ache, fever, and enlarged glands; elevated heart rate, difficulty breathing; loss of control over one’s bowels or bladder; discomfort in the neck or back, seizures (convulsions); or a sense of dizziness, as if you could faint. There may be other adverse effects; this is not an exhaustive list. For medical advice on side effects, give your doctor a call.
